 Saving Rare Breeds

There are over 200 varieties of hen, many with very attractive or distinctive features. MaranAlthough the common hybrid varieties used for intensive egg production certainly produce more eggs in their short lifetime (typically 300 eggs in a 72 week life); more traditional breeds such as the Buff Orpington or French Cuckoo Maran will produce enough eggs to support an average familiy and are quite able to live for a number of years, particularly living in a woodland free ranging environment.

This Easter our local BBC came and did a small piece for the evening news. Click below to play the clip.

4 great reasons to adopt a hen

  • You can save a hen
Every hen adopted will mean one less in an intensive production system. Hens are far happier living in small communities with hedges, trees and room to roam. Adopted hens literally cover acres a day, searching for grubs and insects, and generally nosing about!
  • No mess, no stress
Now you can own your own hen without the mess in your garden, or the worry of how to look after it properly.
  • Know where your eggs are from
Many more of us want to know where our food comes from, and what has been involved in producing it. Now you can view your hen via webcam or come and visit the farm and see for yourself.
  • Enjoy the freshest eggs*
You benefit from a regular supply of eggs (which really do taste better when they’ve been laid by happy hens!)
  • *Provided you live close enough for delivery or collection of course!
